Hysterical British Television Comedy
Innovative series abound on British television, and British television comedy shows like Fawlty Towers and Absolutely Fabulous are ranked as some of the best comedy shows in the world. British television drama shows are also not lacking in excellence, and top British television shows specializing in both comedy and drama have won numerous awards.
Most British television has been broadcasting British comedy television shows and British situational comedies for decades, and the country is well known for creating hysterically funny series, memorable comedy characters and also for launching the careers of several prominent actors.
Britain’s Best Sitcom was a poll conducted in Britain in 2004, and the outcome of this poll was the production of a list of the 100 all time favorite British television comedy series. The BBC’s Only Fools and Horses came in at the number one spot, and this series is a well deserving winner as it has been the recipient of numerous British television awards, including awards from the British Academy and the Royal Television Society.
Second on the list of the best 100 British television comedy shows of all time was Blackadder, which stars the remarkable Rowan Atkinson, who is internationally renowned for his role as Mr Bean, and Hugh Laurie, who is better known for his role as Dr Gregory House on the American television series House MD. Although only twelve episodes of the iconic British television series Fawlty Towers were ever shot, this is one of the most well known British television shows of all time, and it came in at position number 5 on the Best Sitcom list. Other British television situational comedies that have made a lasting impression on commonwealth – and other – countries the world over include Absolutely Fabulous, To The Manor Born and Father, Dear Father.
British television excellence does not stop with comedy, however, and British television drama series, although not as famous in other countries as their comedies, still offer a first class viewing experience. British television series like Inspector Morse and The Cops have both, for instance, won the British Academy Television Awards for best British television drama more than once.
Collections of some of the best British television series are, unfortunately, not so easy to find, but it is hoped that with the help of the various interactive television systems like cable television, satellite television and FIOS television, they will become much more accessible.
