The Hip Hop Music connoisseur knows that new hip hop music is pretty regular, and that old school rap hip hop music never really dies because of it. A quick refresher on some classic hip hop music songs, styles and genre greats can help you figure out what to listen to next in your journey through hip hop.
Old School Hip Hop is that which was recorded and made popular during the early inception stages of the genre prior to the late 1980’s. MCs, DJs and groups like Kurtis Blow, Doug E Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew, and Whodini all left a huge imprint on the collective consciousness of many of the young listeners who would go on to become great rappers in their own right. The early days saw many attempted marketing crossovers, such as rap albums that contained Christmas Music. These attempts to make the burgeoning, inner-city oriented new music style more acceptable to a wider section of the populace were largely met with success and now hop hip music is everywhere.
Other forms of American Music have been significantly changed by the production techniques, methods and styles implemented in the pursuit of hip hop r&b music. Groups like the Neptunes, Wu-Tang Clan and Oukast became powerhouses in the early 2000’s, with their services well in demand from major label recording artists and studios representing a wide range of genre outside of r&b hip hop music. The characteristic sounds these iconic musicians produced was largely based on their r&b, funk, and other early sample sources, as well as the innovative methods they used to splice the samples together.
Hip Hop Music is an important part of any complete modern music collection, and its roots in African Drum music, and Jazz and Island rhythms make it great music for any social occasion, as anyone working in Music Management can attest to. With hear hip hop influenced beats and background music in much of commercial television and advertisements, chances are good that those samples came from some earlier stage of old school hip hop or were influenced by it.
