When you don’t have time to read a book, you can sometimes get your reading fix by picking up a magazine instead.
They aren’t always less literary than books despite the social stigma they sometimes carry among the book-loving crowd. Some like to think of them as literature of “the now.” Magazines such as Reader's Digest, Better Homes and Gardens, National Geographic, Good Housekeeping, Family Circle, Woman's Day, Ladies Home Journal, People, Time, and Prevention will keep you busy on the bus or let you get some light reading in at the end of a long work day.
Magazines are maintaining their popularity despite the onslaught of websites people can read for fun and information. The reason for this could be related to their portability or their completeness. Some people enjoy getting something in the mail besides bills. If you don’t want to pay for a subscription you can borrow a used one from a friend, or many libraries keep the latest editions on their shelves, so go to your local public library and see if this is an option for you. If they are not the most current edition you can often check them out to take home with you, similar to a book. Some of the most popular titles include People, Ladies Home Journal, Woman’s Day
While magazines are supported by advertising, some are wholly supported by gifts from readers and subscription costs. If you get a magazine like this you will be richly rewarded, because it means the editors are practicing integrity and not going for the low-hanging fruit. This happens when magazines offer something outside of popular culture.
Most magazines, however, will feature a celebrity on the cover and many ads in between to help pay for their costs. If you get a magazine like this, subscriptions will probably be somewhat cheaper, and many of the products you see in ads will often appear in articles. Fashion magazines are an example of this. But if that does not bother you, they can be fun to look at and show you what the latest fashions are and how to wear them. You can also learn about the lives of celebrities, possibly some recipes, possibly some tips on how to buy a car. The world is your oyster when you find the right magazine for you.
