Dangerous Deep Sea Fishing

Sometimes deep sea fishing can be dangerous as anglers are trying to land huge and aggressive fish with fairly small sea fishing rods in seas that are often quite choppy. Specialized deep sea fishing tackle has been developed to help with the job, however, and includes deep sea fishing rods and deep sea fishing reels.


Deep sea fishing specializes in catching huge and often unmanageable fish like broadbill swordfish, mako sharks, tiger sharks and great whites. Smaller fish caught can also include the aggressive barracuda with their needle-sharp teeth. There are also dangers associated with putting to sea for long periods of time, and anglers should approach sea fishing with a healthy dose of respect.

Those who practice salt water or sea fishing have to learn to cope with a very different type of environment from those who prefer lake fishing and fresh water fishing in general. Salt water fishing, which is also known as sportfishing, is not for the fainthearted, and anglers have to be fully trained in all relevant safety procedures before going out to sea.

Deep sea fishing reels, for instance, are sometimes attached to boat’s gunwales instead of to the rods as this gives more stability, and the reels’ drag mechanisms will be different from the norm so as to help maintain a specific line tension. Sea fishing rods are fairly long and are extremely sturdily built so as to withstand the great weights they will be dealing with. Anglers have a choice between rods with bent butts and rods with straight butts and the former, although fairly new, are better adapted to being positioned in a game-chair’s gimballed mount.

Some deep sea fishing boats come equipped with game-chairs in which anglers will sit while fishing. An angler does, however, have the option to stand, but this is more dangerous as it is difficult to balance while fighting against fish that can weigh more than the angler and chair combined. Blue marlins alone can weigh over 2,000 pounds and the odds of an angler standing up to a fish this size and winning the battle without all the help he can get are not great.

Deep sea fishing may be exciting, but the sea, and the fish, must be respected.
