There is fresh water bass fishing to put your skill to the test, a variety of opportunities to explore fresh water fishing in lakes, ponds and rivers, and lots of relaxing hours to enjoy on the water in any of the popular fresh water fishing boats you can buy. Grab a fishing rod, a couple of fishing reels and you’re on your way.


While Salt water fishing has its attractions, it can’t compare with the joy of walking down to the local stream or driving to a quiet lake. Some areas offer little or no fresh water fishing but they’re far and few between. It doesn’t take a big lake or a large river to produce a rejuvenating day on the water. Take along a few lures or some fresh water fishing bait and enjoy the water close to home.

Here are a few ideas on how to find a fresh water fishing area near you.

Talk to the locals. If you’re new to an area and looking for some fresh water fishing check with the local bait shop or sporting goods store for a recommendation or two. Most anglers are more than willing to direct you to the area’s hottest fishing hole. Even the local newspaper can steer you towards some excellent fresh water fishing.

Read outdoor magazines covering the region. Several good fishing magazines detail local hotspots and give phone numbers to call for more information. These lakes and streams will be public access and you won’t need permission to fish them.

Call state fisheries biologists. Every state has a wildlife or conservation department that uses fisheries biologists. One of the jobs of these biologists is to keep a finger on the pulse of the state’s fisheries in the lakes and streams. Give them a call. They’re more than happy to point you in the right direction and tell you what species are available in any given body of water.

Check a platte map. Platte maps of your area will show small privately owned ponds and stream access sites that require permission to fish. Do some checking and give the landowners a visit. You might end up fishing where no one else has fished for a long time and enjoy some first class angling action.
