Fishing gear can be highly specialized and is usually manufactured to suit a specific fishing style as is the case with ice fishing gear or carp fishing gear. Further specific types of fishing gear include fly fishing gear and bass fishing gear, and there are many resources that will help the new fisherman identify the various types of fishing gear available.
The term “fishing gear” is usually distinguished from the term “fishing tackle” by saying that commercial fisherman use fishing gear while recreational fisherman use fishing tackle. Fishing gear and fishing tackle can, however, be used interchangeably although fishing tackle generally does not refer to the highly sophisticated items used on the larger commercial fishing ships.
Exactly what fishing gear will be taken along on what fishing trip depends on the type of fishing that is to take place. Fly fishing gear, on the other hand, would comprise the ultra-light rods, the coated and tapered line and the natural and synthetic flies and lures that are used for this hobby. Fishing fly gear can include many different types of flies, from those that are attached directly to the hook to those, like the daisy chains, that merely float near the hook.
Entire industries have developed around hobbies like carp fishing and bass fishing, and carp fishing gear has become so specialized that some items cannot be used for other styles of fishing. In the area of carp bait alone, there are carp bait flavors and carp bait accessories. Bait can be either natural or imitation and carp fishing gear bait accessories include items like hair braids, baiting needles and rig foam.
Hooks, lines, nets, gaffs and sinkers are all considered fishing gear and each, like fishing reel gear, have their own different models that are relevant to the different fishing styles.
