Salma Hayek
A Closer Look At Salma Hayek
Salma Hayek is the most acclaimed Mexican actress of all time and is considered to be an international leading lady in the same league as Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johansson. She performs with ease in both Spanish and English – a trait that celebrities like Jennifer Anniston, Pamela Anderson and Megan Fox lack – and is also known for her humanitarian work.
With a career spanning 1993 through 2010, Salma Hayak is one of the most well know – if not the most well known – of all Mexican actresses.
Diagnosed with dyslexia while still at school, Hayak is a shining example of how to overcome one’s disabilities as competency in her chosen profession relies on reading and understanding the written word. Hayak’s success no doubt serves as a great inspiration to younger performers, Jaden Smith, Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus included, and she has worked in almost every genre, from horror to action to comedy.
While Hayak may have received an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Frida Kahlo in the biopic Frida, she’s perhaps best known for her cameo as Santanico Pandemonium in Tarentino’s From Dusk Till Dawn, which gave her cult status much like the Twlight series has given Robert Patinson and Kristen Stewart cult status (Robert Patinson being the Edward in the notorious Team Edward). As a Hollywood leading lady, Salma Hayak isn’t, perhaps, of the same ilk as Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox or Jessica Alba, and, when she’s not dancing with snakes, Hayak is known for accepting gritty roles and portraying “real” people.
Salma Hayak is also an extremely active humanitarian who is often in the limelight representing organizations such as UNICEF and Do Something, and younger celebrities like, for instance, Lindsay Lohan, Kristen Stewart and Miley Cyrus would do well to follow her example. Hayak is also musically inclined and has sung in various features including Across the Universe, thus joining the ranks of Latina recording artists like Christina Aguilera. Actresses starting to sing seems to be a continuing trend, and Scarlett Johansson is another who has recently joined the ranks of songbirds
Hayak has also made inroads into television, portraying Sofia Reyes in the episodic, Ugly Betty. While hardly one of the television celebrities of the likes of Pamela Anderson or Jennifer Anniston, Hayak’s further television credits include 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live.
