Get Books For Free
For the inveterate bookworm there are plenty of places to get books for free – if you know where to look. You don’t have to own a digital reading device like a Kindle or an iPad or a smart phone but it helps, particularly if you’re interested in perusing the latest title from your favorite author. Here are a few good places to look for free books online, free books downloads and free audio books.
Project Gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org/
The Internet’s oldest digital archive, Project Gutenberg’s mission is to digitize and archive literary works in the public domain, making them available to the reading public in a wide variety of open formats, easily read on any computer. Project Gutenberg is the first stop for classics and a great place to find lesser-known classic by authors your high school English teacher adored.

The king of the box store booksellers has teamed up with Google Books to bring you almost half a million titles. The Free Books download requires an e-reader download available on the Barnes & Noble website. The e-reader is compatible with the Blackberry and the i-Phone, both Mac and PC platforms. After you’re finished downloading the software, just search the menu for the subject you’re interested and sort the results using the “sort by price” option. Voila!

Another Barnes & Noble enterprise, Fictionwise also offers Books Online, a selection of genre titles for lovers of fantasy, science fiction, romance and erotica. Their e-reader is compatible with Palm, PocketPC, Hiebook, eBookMan, Adobe, MS Reader, and WinCE platforms.

For technorati the place to go is FreeTechBooks.com, which offers links to a wide assortment of math, engineering and computer programming textbooks, books and lecture notes. The site doesn’t actually house its E-Book collection; instead it links to author and publisher sites from which the materials can be downloaded. But it vets the titles first to make sure they’re of interest to potential readers.

LibriVox provides avid readers with an opportunity both to download free Audio Books (from titles in the public domain) and to assist other listeners find things to listen to by volunteering with LibriVox’s community reading and recording project. Files may be downloaded as either mp3 or ogg vorbis files and can be opened on your computer using iTunes, Winamp, Windows Media Player.
