We will focus on the best selling books of the year, according to the Nielsen Company, in Adult Fiction.

Best-Selling Books 2009: Adult Fiction

1. The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown

2. The Shack by William P. Young

3. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

4. The Associate by John Grisham

5. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer

Despite being released late in the year, the newest thriller from Dan Brown rocketed to the top of the charts and became the bestselling 2009 book in fiction. The #2 bestseller, The Shack, could not be more different: it was first released in 2007, and first-time novelist William P. Young published it himself. Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife was first published in 2003, but the film adaptation led to extra sales, allowing it to compete with new 2009 books. John Grisham’s novels can usually be found in bestseller lists, and 2009 proved no exception. Sadly, Mary Ann Shaffer did not live to see her book numbered among the bestselling books of 2009, as she passed away in 2008.

In Juvenile Fiction, Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series dominated the list of bestselling books for 2009, taking the top four spots. Indeed, nine of the top ten bestselling Juvenile Books were written by either Meyer or Jeff Kinney. In Nonfiction, the bestselling 2009 book was Steve Harvey’s Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man. The list was dominated, however, by political books, particularly those with a conservative slant.
